In early March of 2006, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey posted the first prototype Tweet, “just setting up my twttr.” Who would have ever thought that by 2012, the President of the United States of America would be using the short message service to reach out to millions of Americans by simply Tweeting, “Four more years”? As of July 2012, the number of Twitter users exceeded the half billion mark.
Today, Twitter released a review of the year 2012’s most impactful Tweets based on both editorial signals and data to showcase several themes including:
- The Pulse of the Planet: Conversations that produced a large number of Tweets and Retweets
- Top Trends: Sudden spikes of interest in the UK, U.S. and Japan
- Golden Tweets: Top two most Retweeted Tweets
- New Voices: New Twitter voices from around the globe
- Only on Twitter: Moments of awesomeness
The Pulse of the Planet
The Pulse of the Planet represents the biggest conversations sparked by single events that attracted a massive amount of Tweets and Retweets. Ranging from award ceremonies to the presidential election, the most popular Tweets surrounded #London2012. The Olympic closing ceremonies averaged over 116,00 Tweets per minute and the most talked about athlete was Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man.
Top Trends
Top Twitter trends of 2012 revealed the most attention grabbing conversation starters to be: politics, sports, TV, movie and music hashtags. The list of popular topics is a mile long, but hashtags that stirred the most activity among users were #throwbackthursday, #gop2012, #superbowl, and #salute.
Golden Tweets
Of all of the powerful figures in the world, I was shocked to find out that the second most Retweeted Tweet came from the teen superstar, Justin Bieber. After I read a little further, I was relieved to find out that it was a tribute to Avalanna Routh, a six-year old super fan who passed away from a rare form of brain cancer in September. Settling in at number one spot with 810,00 Retweets was Barack Obama’s “Four more years.”
New Voices
The list of new Twitter users that are sure to ignite conversations and share far-flung views includes the likes of Benedict XVI, Pele, Neil Young, and Gwen Stefani. These high profile users are sure to attract large amounts of followers who are interested in capturing a glimpse of private moments and feeling like a part of celebrity’s everyday lives.
Only On Twitter
This theme recognizes Tweets that came to life on Twitter and represent remarkable moments of chance. This year, Twitter followers got to see the space shuttle, Endeavor’s final ride home. We also received Tweets live from the International Space Station and Mars. Users got an inside look of the #L2012PoolCam as Olympic swimmers swam their hearts out. Perhaps the most interesting Tweet of all came from the bottom of the Mariana Trench as movie director James Cameron sent a Tweet from 35,755 feet beneath the ocean.
All in all, the visually appealing presentation of Twitter’s 2012 year displays an impressive insight into the successful social media platform. After looking back on the remarkable events of this past year, 2013 has big shoes to fill, and I am eager to see what the future holds.

Twitter is a great microblogging network one must be active in. With lots of subscriber benefit that Twitter has got previous year, I think one thing it still lost and that is the Alexa rank which is now 10 instead of 3. However I am sure this year also Twitter will have more subscribers than 2012 as many new businesses, businessmen or individuals will come to know about its effect and benefits.
Thanks
Jems

Hi Jems,
Thanks for your comment, I do agree with you. However Alexa ranking is not always a major factor to measure how successful a social media is.
